The purpose of our “More Than Rugby” program is to support our players aspiring to Be Healthier, Be Stronger and Be Resilient.
Stewartry RFC “More Than Rugby” has been in development prior to Covid but become a priority this season after all rugby activity halting at the club due to restrictions.
The program identifies players based not on their ability but more importantly on their attitude and commitment.
Currently supporting 40 players across our Boys and Girls sections, we provide a support network consisting of Mental Skills and Wellbeing Development, Strength & Conditioning, and Nutritional support.
Players, supported by the coaches and our Development Officer, set goals and targets based around their own development plan and work on these goals.
We are proud to have so many young athletes invested in the program in its first year and under the current circumstances.
The classes are ran online, where players log in from home and complete challenges, do workouts or have conversations with coaches and external partners on each topic.
We are working in Partnership with CrossFit Castle Douglas, Breathing Space and Dumfries and Galloway Council to deliver this program now and in the future.
Stewartry Rugby Club, in partnership with our local Secondary Schools offer pupils the opportunity to participate in the School of Rugby Programme.
As part of the on-going development of rugby in Stewartry, the Rugby club run a bespoke ‘School of Rugby’ programme to each secondary school which give pupils the opportunity to improve their physical literacy and rugby skills during the school term, and to enjoy the many benefits that participation in rugby offers.
The School of Rugby will give selected pupils from S1 and S2 the opportunity to train in a rugby environment for 1 or 2 periods of school time per week for the first years of their secondary school life. This programme is designed as a social and academic development program that will not only help young boys and girls develop as players, but also aid them in their physical, social, emotional and academic development in their first years in secondary school.
The inclusion of our Director of Rugby ensures a sustainable link is created from school to club and will enhance and develop the current school pathway from primary school rugby to secondary school rugby.
Sport can play a powerful role in providing the catalyst to improve the quality of life for young people in communities across Scotland. Rugby can offer potential life-changing opportunities to enhance education and skills, improve health and wellbeing and fosters an ethos of teamwork; discipline and respect for officials, opponents and team mates.

The Stewartry Rugby Coaching Programme is supported by our Director of Rugby and delivered by Stewartry Rugby Club First XV Coaches and special guests.
The Stewartry Way, linked to the SRU Technical Blueprint, is the Clubs strategy to develop all-round skilled performers to ensure a steady flow of players make their way through the Academy system and into Stewartry’s senior teams.
Through our coaching and dedication to The Stewartry Way we will develop skilled performers who understand and are part of the club’s future.
At the first meeting after the AGM the committee agreed that the cost of living will effect our club finances and the finances of our members.
We unanimously agreed that the costs of these increases should not effect anyone’s ability to enjoy playing rugby at Stewartry Rugby Club.
We have put together a pledge to members to help them through the coming season:-
Stewartry Rugby Football Club is dedicated to providing high quality and accessible opportunities that enable all players from all backgrounds to participate in Rugby.
Due to the current cost of living, we do not want family finances to restrict rugby players from playing the sport they love and representing Stewartry RFC.
