Stewartry Men 31-12 Greenock – 19/10/2024

Club News | 21st Oct 2024

Stewartry got back to winning ways on Saturday with a strong 31-12 win over Greenock Wanderers.

The victory sees them leapfrog Greenock in the league to go four points clear of the Fort Matilda side with a game in hand to play too.

In true Stewartry fashion, it was the away side that started the game the better and got an early try to put the Blacks on the back foot in the opening stages.

David Thomson’s side switched on from there, however, and got two quick-fire tries of their own. Chris Root powering his way over to level things up before a smart tap and go from Lochy Spence saw Stewartry take the lead.

The home side kept the pressure on Greenock and ensured they went into the halftime break with a comfortable lead after a well-worked move was finished off by winger Merlin Lawrence in the corner.

Three tries, plus two conversions from the boot of Andrew Picken, saw the first 40 finish 19-5 to Stewartry.

Stewartry’s bonus point was secured with a brilliant break through the line from Sam Tait to score his second try of the season.

Despite conceding a somewhat soft try a few minutes later, the day was rounded off in style, with James McCulloch getting his first-ever score for Stewartry on his 40th appearance to round off a 31-12 win.

Five points for SRFC in the Greenlaw sunshine and they climb to eighth in Scottish National 4.

The Blacks head north to Newton Mearns this week to face Whitecraigs. A win on the road there will see them climb yet another place on the table and out of the relegation zone.
