Senior Men (1st XV) | 18th Sep 2023
It was a momentous weekend for Stewartry Rugby Club as on Saturday, September 16th the Men’s 1XV, 2XV and Women’s 1XV all played side by side at Greenlaw for the first time in their 53-year history.
The Men’s 1XV made it three wins from three this season with a comfortable 67-17 win against Greenock Wanderers to move into second in the Scottish National 4 table.
After a fast start from the home side, Michael McCulloch went over the line to score his first of the campaign in the 12th minute.
Just five minutes later, Ross Sanderson added a second after some good hands from the backs saw him collect the ball on the left wing to dot down.
Two quick tries from powerful number 8 Finlay Telfer had the try bonus point wrapped up for Stewartry within 30 minutes. Greenock did manage to pull a score back but it was quickly cancelled out by vice-captain TJ McCarney getting his second try in as many games.
Halftime score: Stewrtry 34-7 Greenock Wanderers.
The Blacks came out in the second half firing, scoring a brilliant try under the posts through hooker Kieran McGuire before winger Andrew Picken dived in at the corner for another and claim his first of the season.
Some ill-discipline began to keep in for Sandy Currie’s men, however, as both Telfer and Archie Nicolson were shown yellow cards at different stages of the second 40. Greenock took full advantage of having an extra man and scored two quick tries to try and mount a comeback.
Unfortunately for the travelling fans, Stewartry hit back and managed another three tries before the end of the game. Telfer with his hat trick and both McCulloch and McCarney with their seconds.
Stewartry picked up all five points available, as well as denying Greenock the scoring bonus, and now look ahead to their trip to Dunfermline on Saturday, September 23rd.
