Club News, Senior Women (Sirens) | 10th Jun 2020

During lockdown the Stewartry Sirens Women’s Rugby team have been working hard to stay connected during a time in which we would normally be enjoying cup competitions/7s tournaments and beach rugby.

Sammy Durnan from the Sirens said “With keeping our mental health in mind we have been setting ourselves team challenges to keep ourselves active.

Along with team quizzes, setting ourselves our own individual challenges. Running Broncos, completing the dreaded ‘Fat Amy’ workout, The fastest 5k and captain Ali’s full body workouts we have also been working along side our girls team to complete group challenges.

We have shown our competitive side at the beginning of lockdown by using our 1 hour outdoor time to race in two teams from Greenlaw to John O’Groats and back. Showing great effort covering a total of 736 miles in 6 days, with a overall total of 1391 miles altogether.

On the 22nd May Along with our Sharkettes, we have virtually been travelling from Stewartry Rugby Club to New York City. Covering the 3244 miles by walking, running or cycling and taking pictures along the way.

The Challenge has been in two parts:

Part 1: Starting on the 22nd May we travelled 550 miles in just 5 days!

Our coach Gordon Thomson and his family have kindly donated £1 per mile we reached over the 550 miles within the first 5days. With a total of £110.

Part 2: The Sirens & Sharkettes now continue their journey towards the 3244 miles which we are currently somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean with over half way to go.

With our outdoor exercise time increasing we have been able to cover more distance daily.

Being part of a small community we are very thankful for their support not only towards our team but to the whole club.

Having a team of animal lovers we have decided to use this to help support our community by raising awareness and money for two local Charities.

Dumfries and Galloway Canine Rescue Centre

The 3 R’s Horse Rescue Centre – in which one of our players Holly Murdoch is a founding member of.

With most animal charities normally relying on donations we are aware at how difficult it has been for them during the covid-19 lockdown.

We have set up a fundraising page which people can access to donate.

To keep us motivated we are asking all our friends/family and supporters if they could donate just £1 to help us support these fantastic charities.
