Hillhead Give Sirens a Tough Encounter

The Sirens traveled to Glasgow last weekend for their final match of 2016 against Hillhead Jordanhill. Prepared for yet another tough encounter, the Sirens were looking to improve on previous performances with extended phases of play and getting more points on the board.

They knew that the Hillhead Jordanhill side, who are currently top of the league on points difference, would put in a strong performance to keep the number one spot.

Hills were quick to put points on the board, taking the scoreline to 0-14 in the first 10 minutes. A brilliant tap penalty from scrum half Claire Manson meant the Sirens came close to the try line, but weren’t quite able to make it across.

Despite showing real physicality on the pitch and some good phases of play in attack, the Sirens struggled to contain two of their strong runners, which led to several breakaway tries for the home side, taking the half time score to 55-0.

The Sirens managed to regroup at half time, and began to target the issues on the field. With fullback Jenny Yates moving into the defensive line as an extra player, things really tightened up and the Stewartry side managed to contain their attack a lot more.

Following a fantastic team play, winger Bethan Cameron scored Stewartry’s first try of the game, and her first try for the team, on just her third outing on the pitch.

A fantastic break from the scrum by prop Shannon Nicholson, and strong support from, Cameron led to Manson crossing the whitewash for the Sirens second try, before the try was disallowed for her foot just grazing into touch.

Not to be put off, the Sirens continued to keep up strong pressure in attack and a great individual break on what is now a trademark storming run by centre Iona St Joseph gave Stewartry their second try of the game.

Final score Hills 74 – 10 Sirens. The Sirens next game in the BT Women’s Premier League is on the 8th of January at home to Murrayfield Wanderers.
